NYC First-Timer’s Tips: What You Shouldn’t Miss

Navigating Your Arrival: The Three Major Gateways

Before you can dive into the city’s energy, you have to land. The metropolitan area is served by three major airports, each offering different advantages depending on your final destination. John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in Queens is the premier hub for international arrivals and connects seamlessly to Manhattan via the AirTrain. Also located in Queens, LaGuardia Airport (LGA) is the closest option geographically to Midtown and boasts beautifully modernized terminals primarily for domestic flights. Just across the river in New Jersey sits Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), which provides a highly efficient alternative with direct rail access into Manhattan’s Penn Station. To learn more about navigating transit from your terminal, booking ground transport, and picking the right hub for your itinerary, check out our comprehensive article dedicated to getting you to and from JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark airports.

Stay in the Heart of the Action

The foundation of a successful trip is your home base. To truly immerse yourself in the city’s energy, check into an opulent suite at The Fifty Sonesta Select New York. Located in the heart of Midtown, this property offers a residential-style retreat that feels worlds away from the street-level hustle. Its spacious layouts and sophisticated design provide the perfect sanctuary to recharge between excursions. We were hosted here on a recent trip to the city and loved the location’s convenience, the hotel’s comfort and amenities, and the outstanding service.

Start with an Opulent Morning

For a completely different kind of culinary landmark, Liberty Bagel is a great stop throughout the day for an anything-but-plain bagel. Famed for their hand-rolled, vibrant creations, you can opt for their iconic, multicolored rainbow or liberty colorful bagels to add some visual flair to your meal. Beyond the eye-catching dough, the shop features an incredible variety of house-made schmears alongside a massive selection of hearty bagel sandwiches, making it an essential pit stop for anyone wanting an authentic taste of the city’s doughy heritage. If you later find yourself further north near Central Park, Gray’s Papaya is another excellent option for an inexpensive yet classic New York City bite. Grabbing a legendary NYC hot dog here is a quintessential rite of passage before a stroll through the winding paths of the park, offering a perfect finish to the city’s iconic, fast-paced culinary scene. To round out your tour of essential NYC institutions, no visit is complete without a trip to Katz’s Delicatessen on the Lower East Side. This legendary spot has been carving up the city’s most famous, sky-high pastrami and corned beef sandwiches for generations, offering an unforgettable taste of old-world New York history.

Scale the Iconic Skyline

No ultimate NYC first timer’s guide is complete without a trip to the clouds. The Empire State Building remains the gold standard for sightseeing. Ascending to its observation decks provides a 360-degree lesson in Manhattan’s geography. To cap off your evening with a different kind of view, head to Vintage Green. This lush rooftop bar offers expertly crafted cocktails and a vibrant atmosphere, allowing you to watch the city lights flicker to life from a stylish, elevated perch. Refinery Rooftop is another popular evening hotspot for a drink, a meal, a view, and so many vibes.

Take to the Water

To truly appreciate the scale of the Manhattan skyline, you must see it from the harbor. Whether you choose a comprehensive Circle Line Tour for historical narration or the iconic, free Staten Island Ferry, getting on the water is essential. For those on a tight schedule, the “speedy” NYC Ferry St. George route offers a fantastic middle ground, whisking you to Staten Island and back in under an hour with incredible, close-up views of the Statue of Liberty. It’s the most efficient way to capture that perfect Lady Liberty photo while enjoying the river breeze.
