Pier Attractions and Historic Route 66

The historic Santa Monica Pier, a wooden structure extending over the Pacific Ocean, is a major cultural and entertainment hub that dates back over a century.

Pacific Park and Amusements

The pier is home to Pacific Park, a full-service amusement park offering carnival games and various rides. Its most famous feature is the world’s only solar-powered Ferris wheel, the Pacific Wheel, which offers spectacular, sweeping views of the coastline, the Santa Monica Mountains, and the city skyline. The pier also features arcades, souvenir shops, and restaurants specializing in fresh seafood, making it a great place to spend an afternoon enjoying the unique attractions of the Santa Monica Pier.

The End of Route 66

The pier is notably recognized as the official western end of the historic U.S. Route 66, the famed “Mother Road.” This designation provides a popular photo spot for visitors and travelers, marking the completion of the legendary cross-country drive.

Beach Activities and Coastal Exploration

The area surrounding the pier offers expansive sandy beaches and opportunities for active and relaxing coastal fun.

Recreation on Santa Monica Beach

The wide, sandy Santa Monica Beach located south of the pier is ideal for sunbathing, swimming, and various beach sports, including volleyball. The area is overseen by lifeguards, offering a safe environment for swimming in the Pacific Ocean. Visitors can rent bikes near the pier to explore the expansive coastal bike paths, such as the Marvin Braude Bike Trail, or enjoy the vast expanse of sand for sunbathing. Be sure to stay until sunset, as the views over the Pacific Ocean, with the pier lights twinkling, are truly spectacular and worth the wait.
