Why Suncare Matters Year-Round—No Matter Where You Travel

When planning a trip, sunscreen is often treated as a beach-day essential—something reserved for tropical destinations or summer getaways. But the reality is far more important: suncare isn’t seasonal. Whether you’re skiing in the Alps, strolling through Boston in the fall, or exploring a cloudy European city, protecting your skin from the sun is a year-round necessity.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, ultraviolet (UV) rays are present every day of the year. They can penetrate clouds, meaning your skin is exposed even when the sun isn’t shining brightly. That makes daily sun protection a critical step not just for preventing sunburn, but for long-term skin health.

UV Exposure Doesn’t Take a Vacation

One of the biggest misconceptions travelers have is that UV exposure is only a concern in warm, sunny climates. In reality, UV rays are just as present in colder destinations—and in some cases, even more intense.

Experts at the Skin Cancer Foundation say that up to 80 percent of UV rays can pass through clouds, which means overcast days still pose a risk. Snow, sand, and water can also reflect UV radiation, increasing exposure in environments like ski resorts, beaches, and even urban waterfronts.

For travelers heading to higher elevations, the risk climbs even further. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UV exposure increases with altitude, making mountain destinations particularly important places to prioritize sunscreen—even in winter.

Everyday Exposure Adds Up

While a single day in the sun might not seem significant, cumulative exposure over time is what leads to long-term damage. That includes premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and increased risk of skin cancer.

The World Health Organization notes that UV radiation is a major environmental risk factor for skin damage globally, reinforcing the importance of consistent protection—not just during vacations, but as part of your daily routine.

For travelers, this is especially relevant. Walking tours, outdoor dining, sightseeing, and transit time all add up to hours spent outside, often without realizing how much exposure you’re getting.

Not Just About Sunburn

Suncare is often associated with avoiding sunburn, but the benefits go far beyond that. Daily protection helps maintain overall skin health and appearance, reducing signs of aging such as fine lines and dark spots.

According to research cited by Harvard Health Publishing, regular sunscreen use can significantly slow skin aging and reduce the risk of skin cancer. This makes it one of the simplest—and most effective—preventative measures you can take while traveling.

Suncare Essentials for Every Destination

No matter where you’re headed, a few key habits can make all the difference:

  • Wear broad-spectrum sunscreen daily: Look for SPF 30 or higher and reapply every two hours when outdoors.
  • Don’t skip cloudy days: UV rays are still present, even without direct sunlight.
  • Protect beyond your face: Areas like your neck, ears, and hands are often overlooked.
  • Use additional protection: Sunglasses, hats, and protective clothing can help reduce exposure.

These small steps are easy to incorporate into your travel routine and can have a lasting impact on your skin health.

A Year-Round Travel Essential

Sunscreen might not seem as exciting as booking a hotel or planning your itinerary, but it’s one of the most important items you can pack—no matter the destination or season.

From city streets to mountain peaks, UV exposure is constant. And as experts across leading health organizations emphasize, consistent protection is key to preventing long-term damage.

Wherever your travels take you, think of suncare as a non-negotiable—because healthy skin is always in season.
