Midtown Manhattan is legendary for its relentless, electrifying pace. Yet, just a few blocks away from the neon glow of Times Square, tucked into the quieter, tree-lined corridors of Midtown East, lies a sanctuary designed for those who want to experience the city rather than just visit it.

The Fifty Sonesta redefines the classic New York hotel stay by blending the luxury of a premier boutique hotel with the soulful warmth of a private Manhattan flat.

Art, Motion, and the Spirit of Midtown

From the moment you step into the lobby, it is clear that The Fifty Sonesta is deeply connected to the creative pulse of the city. Rather than generic decor, the spaces are anchored by a thoughtfully curated collection of local art, including striking sculptures by Montserrat Daubon and Pedro Villalta.

“The Fifty Sonesta Hotel was designed as a residential retreat perfect for business and leisure travelers on extended or short stays,” says Simon Chapman, General Manager for The Benjamin Royal Sonesta and The Fifty Sonesta. “The inspiration behind the curated art collection comes from New York City’s spirit and the vibrant energy of Midtown.”

By spotlighting neighborhood creators, the hotel establishes an immediate, authentic sense of place. “Featuring works by local artists allowed the hotel to bring that energy directly into the guest experience,” Chapman notes, “reinforcing the idea that the hotel is more than just a place to stay.”

Suspended gracefully within the property is a magnificent blue glass mobile by artist David Smith, engineered alongside an MIT specialist to capture the literal and metaphorical physics of the city. Featuring handblown blue glass that constantly shifts in the light and breeze, the sculpture is designed to reflect the city’s restless spirit. As Chapman notes, “The energy of New York is always moving, and the mobile captures that movement.”

“The handblown glass figurines constantly shift with light, wind, and perspective throughout the day,” Chapman explains. “The subtlest change can shift perspective and position, where each of the figures can interact independently or with each other depending on the direction of the wind or light.”

Built with History: From the Cornell Club to Apartment Suites

The Fifty Sonesta’s distinct, home-like layout is no accident of modern architecture; it is baked directly into the building’s mid-century bones. Originally constructed as an apartment building, the structure once hosted the original Cornell Club in the 1960s.

“That’s where the inspiration for our second-floor Club Room came from,” Chapman shares. When Sonesta officially took over the property, transitioning it from its former life as an Affinia hotel, the goal was to modernize the infrastructure while fiercely protecting the footprint of the rooms.

Key Renovation Priorities:

  • Space over Density: Preserving the expansive layouts rather than carving them up into smaller, traditional hotel rooms.
  • Elevated Luxury: Evolving the property with two brand-new, high-floor Penthouses.
  • Fresh Interiors: Installing pristine new flooring and contemporary finishes across all guestrooms and suites.
  • Subtle Sustainability: Operational green updates designed to reduce waste, including custom in-room recycling initiatives, optional towel reuse, and premium refillable amenities to eliminate single-use plastics.

“When the building became a hotel, the designs were developed based on how people actually want to experience New York,” says Chapman. “Many of our guests stay longer, blending business and leisure, traveling with family, internationally, or simply looking for more flexibility and comfort. The Apartment Suites were designed to feel residential and livable, with full kitchens, spacious layouts, terraces, and contemporary interiors that give guests the opportunity to live like a New Yorker.”

The Gold Standard: The East River Penthouse

For travelers seeking the ultimate Manhattan lifestyle, the property’s crown jewel is the East River Penthouse. Hovering twenty stories above the pavement, it feels less like a temporary lodging and more like a collector’s private residence.

“The East River Penthouse was inspired by the impressive views from 20 floors above the city,” Chapman describes. “It embraces a residential warmth with neutral tones, while rich accent colors, contemporary details, and curated artwork draw from the architectural character of the city.”

The Luxury of Private Air

In a city where private outdoor space is the ultimate currency, the suite’s sweeping, wrap-around terrace is a revelation.

“The large furnished terrace is such an incredibly unique offering in Midtown—especially during the spring and summer,” Chapman says. “Guests use it for morning coffee and breakfast overlooking the skyline, while others enjoy sunset cocktails before dinner. It’s an inspiring open-air space to recharge between meetings, great for grabbing a laptop and working outdoors, or taking time to relax between sightseeing.”

The space has even become a centerpiece for milestone life moments. “We have hosted wedding groups where the bride and groom utilize the two penthouses to get ready with great photo-op city skyline moments,” Chapman adds.

Finding Pause in a Fast City

Inside the Penthouse, guests will find a piece of custom artwork carrying a simple, profound message: “Good Things Take Time.” It serves as the guiding thesis for the entire guest experience.

“The New York City pace typically moves incredibly fast, and we wanted the hotel to feel like a place where guests can slow down and reconnect with themselves, even in the middle of the energy of Midtown,” Chapman reflects. “We believe travel is more than just a destination—it’s an opportunity to pause, reflect, and reconnect.”

To turn this philosophy into practice, the hotel features a dedicated Digital Detox area. Outfitted with deep, comfortable couches and curated bookshelves, the space serves as a physical invitation to unplug and be entirely present.

The Smart Traveler’s Secret: Midtown East

While first-time tourists often gravitate toward the bright lights of Times Square, seasoned travelers know that Midtown East is the true sweet spot for a Manhattan home base.

“Midtown East offers something many visitors do not initially expect—true city convenience,” Chapman notes. “Guests are close to iconic city attractions, corporate offices for business travel, luxury shopping, and major transportation hubs including buses and subways, yet the neighborhood itself feels more residential and relaxed. It allows travelers to experience New York more like a true local—with quieter side streets, local cafés, and a more authentic city stay.”

Local Insider Gems

If you want to experience the neighborhood like a seasoned pro, Simon Chapman and his team—whom he proudly defines in three words as “authentic, thoughtful, and genuine”—recommend two classic, local-approved itineraries:

  • The Hidden Oasis: Walk just a few minutes to Greenacre Park on 51st Street (between 2nd and 3rd Avenue). This pocket park, established by the Rockefeller family, features a stunning 25-foot waterfall that completely drowns out the hum of city traffic.
  • The Classic Neighborhood Drift: Hop on the 6 train down to SoHo to graze through cobblestone boutiques, then drift into the historic, tree-lined streets of the West Village for a glass of wine on Bleecker Street and live jazz.

Looking Ahead

As we move deeper into 2026, The Fifty Sonesta is continuing to pioneer programs that embed guests directly into the cultural fabric of the city.

This summer, sports fans can experience the newly launched Ultimate Matchday Experience, timed perfectly for the highly anticipated World Cup matches kicking off in New York. Come August, the hotel will host up-and-coming tennis stars for the US Open, complete with a specially curated, tennis-themed lounge space for guests to unwind.

And for those planning a winter getaway? “This year will be our third year in creating a curated, decked-out holiday suite,” Chapman reveals. “Guests are not just booking a room—they are stepping into a fully designed seasonal experience that feels nostalgic, playful, and iconically New York.”
