SIX: The Musical on Broadway — Olivia Donalson on Playing Anna of Cleves and Experiencing NYC Theatre

Inside SIX: The Musical on Broadway

Fans heading to Broadway this season won’t want to miss SIX: The Musical, the high-energy pop retelling of Henry VIII’s wives that has become one of the most talked-about shows in New York theatre. Cast member Olivia Donalson brings one of the production’s boldest personalities to life each night.

When asked about her current role, Donalson explains:

“I am Anna of Cleves! The Fourth wife of Henry the 8th who got a swift divorce, wealth, and independence. So the sweetest deal of all the wives.”

Olivia Donalson’s Path to Broadway

Before joining the cast of SIX: The Musical, Donalson’s performing journey moved from music training to professional theatre work.

“I grew up in a very musical family and always wanted to act/be a Disney Channel star, but I ultimately was redirected to band, where I spent middle and high school playing oboe very seriously. Theatre was still in my heart, though, so I went to Ithaca College for theatre and from there pursued theatre in NYC! My very first job was in shows on the Disney Cruise line, and then I went on to do the Aladdin 1st National tour and Broadway company, and now we are a part of the SIX family!”

Her training at Ithaca College and early work with Disney Cruise Line helped shape the performance skills she now brings to Broadway audiences.

How to Describe SIX: The Musical to First-Time Visitors

For visitors new to Broadway, Donalson offers a simple way to understand what makes the show stand out:

“The six wives of Henry the 8th host a pop concert competition to see who had the WORST time as his wife. It’s 90 minutes of fierce energy, incredible vocals and ultimately a message of sisterhood and empowerment.”

This mix of pop-concert staging, history remix, and strong female storytelling is exactly why SIX: The Musical continues to attract both theatre lovers and first-time Broadway attendees.

Olivia Donalson’s Tips for Visiting New York City

Seeing SIX: The Musical is only one part of a great NYC trip. Donalson shares a practical tip for navigating the city:

“If you’re slow walking, taking it all in, please stay to the right of the sidewalk. Venture out of midtown at least once, there are so many other cool parts of the city that will be a lot less crowded!”

Her advice encourages visitors to explore beyond Times Square and discover neighborhoods throughout New York City.

Where Olivia Donalson Goes Out in NYC

For a night out after performing in SIX: The Musical, Donalson gravitates toward live music.

“I love live jazz. So I’ll go to Dizzy’s for semi upscale with a view, Mezzrow and Smalls for an energizing yet intimate experience, and Blue Note for incredible artists that are jazz and beyond.”

Her picks include Dizzy’s Club, Mezzrow, Smalls Jazz Club, and Blue Note Jazz Club, all well-known destinations for visitors seeking classic New York nightlife.

Her Theatre Recommendations for Visitors

Donalson strongly encourages travelers to make live performance a central part of their trip.

“I can’t recommend live theatre enough. Broadway shows, off Broadway shows, opera, the ballet, in all Boroughs there are incredible theatrical experiences, they can’t go wrong catching a show or 4!”

What She Loves Most About NYC

For Donalson, the appeal of the city extends far beyond the stage.

“It’s a true melting pot, bursting with culture, buzzing with fine arts and good food, and as busy as it is, we look out for each other here, and I’m thankful.”
