Sculpted in Steel and Speed: Exploring the Petersen Automotive Museum

Just across the street from the Academy Museum on the famous Miracle Mile, the Petersen Automotive Museum stands as a secular cathedral for car culture. Enveloped in a striking, futuristic exterior of swirling stainless-steel ribbons designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox, the museum celebrates the automobile not just as a tool of transport, but as a definitive art form and a catalyst for global cultural evolution.

Founded over 30 years ago by publisher Robert E. Petersen and his wife Margie, this 100,000-square-foot facility houses one of the world’s largest and most diverse collections of vehicular history, technology, and design.

1. Three Floors of Themed Automotive Artistry

The museum is thoughtfully organized across three primary levels, each isolating a specific element of the automobile’s impact on human history:

  • The History Floor (3rd Floor): This level explores the deep chronological timeline of the automobile, tracking its societal disruption. It is also famously home to the Cars of Film & Television gallery, featuring Hollywood legends like the Batmobile, vehicles from The Fast & The Furious franchise, and science-fiction icons.
  • The Industry Floor (2nd Floor): Focused on engineering, manufacturing, and design optimization, this floor showcases the raw mechanics behind speed. It features rotating exhibits highlighting racing history, rare motorcycles, and cutting-edge autonomous vehicles. This level also houses the interactive Discovery Center and a virtual racing simulator experience.
  • The Artistry Floor (1st Floor): Dedicated to pure design aesthetic, this floor focuses on masterfully sculpted luxury vehicles and historic concept cars where car styling merges seamlessly with fine art.

2. The Vault: The Museum’s Underground Treasure Trove

While the main galleries are stunning, the definitive pilgrimage for any true automotive purist lies deep beneath the building in The Vault.

Accessible only through an upgraded ticket package, The Vault is a massive underground depository holding over 250 rare and historically significant vehicles that are not currently on display in the main galleries. Here, visitors walk rows of world-famous hot rods, rare European supercars, classic Hollywood cruisers (like Steve McQueen’s 1956 Jaguar XKSS), and historic presidential state limousines. Because the vehicles in The Vault are constantly rotated, no two visits are ever exactly alike.

3. Current Major Exhibitions

The Petersen Automotive Museum keeps its footprint dynamic with massive rotating retrospectives. Notable current and upcoming exhibits include:

  • A Fast & Furious Legacy: 25 Years of Automotive Icons (Exploring the custom cars that defined a generation of cinema).
  • World-Class: 100 Years of Mercedes-Benz (Celebrating a century of luxury engineering).
  • World’s Fastest (A gripping, historical breakdown of record-setting land-speed vehicles).
  • Masterpieces from the Mullin Collection (Exquisite French art-deco automotive classics newly unveiled in The Vault).

Planning Your Visit

The Petersen Automotive Museum can be found on Miracle Mile at 6060 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA. The museum is open daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

While general admission tickets grant access to all three main floors, booking an “Admission + Vault” combo ticket in advance is highly recommended to secure a time slot for the underground tour. Whether you are a casual fan of beautiful design or a hardcore gearhead fascinated by mechanical history, the Petersen offers an unparalleled look at the machines that shaped the modern world.
