Jousting and Festive Feasting on the Strip
The Tournament of Kings show transforms into a holiday spectacular called”’ Twas the Knight,” successfully blending classic medieval action with a festive atmosphere. According to Philip Shelburne, Director of Tournament of Kings, the production integrates a holiday soundscape without sacrificing excitement in a variety of ways. Holiday music greets guests upon entry and exit, and the show begins with characters Hark the Herald, Merlin, and Jester leading the audience in a participatory Christmas song and poem. Mr. Shelburne added that a spirited “Holiday Song” was “composed specifically for the show and audience’s participation, and holiday music accents Merlin’s magical snowfall.”
The arena is fully transformed into a winter wonderland through specialized scenic, costume, and lighting elements. Mr. Shelburne described the immersive atmosphere: “Holiday music accentuates much of the production and adds to the festive feeling.” He noted that the cast, including Merlin, Jester, Hark the Herald, Maidens, and Lady Noelle upon her white steed, are “all outfitted in beautiful holiday-specific attire.” The spectacle is completed with lighting, special effects, festive props, and Merlin’s magical snowfall, during which “the Maidens dance with Lady Noelle and her white stallion.”

Creating a Vegas Holiday Tradition
The”’ Twas the Knight” dining experience is also tailored for the season. Klejdi Janllari, Executive Director of Food & Beverage, Excalibur Hotel & Casino, explained the culinary philosophy: “The holiday menu for ‘Twas the Knight was designed to blend the spirit of the season with the show’s signature medieval feasting experience.” Mr. Janllari added that the herb-roasted chicken “remains at the center of the meal, reflecting the hearty, king’s-table style entrée that’s long been part of the Tournament of Kings tradition.” The seasonal meal is thoughtfully arranged with a soft roll, corn on the cob, roasted red potato and “complemented by a warm, seasonal pumpkin pastry,” ensuring the menu “brings in festive flavors while staying true to the immersive medieval atmosphere.”
The show has quickly become a major Las Vegas holiday tradition due to its unique, immersive appeal. Mr. Shelburne believes the show resonates strongly because “the festive atmosphere, delectable meal and family-inspired show provide guests with an inviting and immersive holiday experience.” He summarized the appeal: “Cheering, feasting, Kings, mighty steeds, beautiful Maidens, magical Merlin, snow and holiday cheer… what’s not to love being a part of this celebration!”
Implementing the full holiday overlay presents distinct logistical challenges, given its short run from late November to Christmas. The Director explained that maintaining the regular double-show schedule while integrating new elements requires precise planning: “Our rehearsals for the holiday show begin mid-October… Rehearsals require meticulous planning for all our staff, talent and crew members because the production is juggling performing the regular show while rehearsing for the holiday show simultaneously.” Despite the complexity, this meticulous preparation ensures the show is ready to deliver its seasonal blend of action and cheer to visitors seeking holiday fun on the Strip.
