How Pink Jeep Tours Became America’s Iconic Adventure Experience

Since its beginnings in 1960 as the first guided Jeep tour company in the United States, Pink Jeep Tours has carved out a distinctive place in the world of adventure travel. What started with a bold idea and even bolder vehicles has evolved into a multi-destination operation known for its expert guides, deep local access, and unforgettable experiences. Below, we explore the history, philosophy, and unique qualities that make Pink Jeep Tours a standout name in outdoor exploration.

The Vision That Started It All

Pink Jeep Tours’ founder, Don Pratt, had a simple but ambitious idea: create guided excursions that put people directly into the heart of some of America’s most awe-inspiring landscapes, using vehicles rugged enough to handle the terrain. The now-iconic pink color of the Jeeps was not a calculated branding strategy at first, but a splash of inspiration that would become central to the company’s identity.

“Our color was inspired by a trip to Hawaii by our founder. He visited a hotel where everything was pink, and his wife thought it would be a great idea to paint their Jeeps the same color,” Sr Director Marketing & Sales at Pink Jeep Tours, Cody Hudson, told us. “Over the years, the shade of pink evolved, and so has our connection to it. It’s a color that stands out and refuses to blend in, which suits us perfectly, as we are determined to be a positive presence.”

That vivid color wasn’t chosen to follow a trend; it was chosen to reflect a spirit of adventure and visibility — a reminder that exploration should be both bold and welcoming.

Staying True to Core Principles

Operating for more than 65 years in the Southwest and beyond requires more than eye-catching vehicles. Pink Jeep Tours credits its longevity to a strong internal culture and an unwavering commitment to guest experience.

“Pink Jeep Tours has stayed grounded in a simple philosophy: hire people who appreciate nature, genuinely care about others and can deliver educational and memorable experiences,” President of Parks & Pink Adventure for Herschend Family Entertainment, John Fitzgibbons, explained. “This company culture and philosophy drives everything we do and is the heart of who we are… Maintaining a roster of highly trained guides, enforcing rigorous safety standards and continually updating our tour offerings have allowed us to stay consistent while still innovating.”

Those values, aligned with the broader mission of Herschend Family Entertainment, put emphasis on exceeding guest expectations, creating emotional connections, and improving continuously — all essential ingredients in a competitive adventure travel market.

Training, Equipment, and Safety That Build Trust

Anyone familiar with Pink Jeep Tours knows the quality of the experience comes down to the guides and the vehicles, both of which are the result of long-term investment.

“Pink Jeep Tours adventure guides go through a rigorous training process that includes emergency medical training and driving techniques used by fleets like UPS and FedEx,” Fitzgibbons said of the process. “The training never truly ends. We are constantly researching and bringing in experts to shed new perspectives on tour destinations.”

But it isn’t just people who stand out. The vehicles themselves reflect innovation and partnership.

“Our vehicles are customized from top to bottom to ensure tours are safe, comfortable and exciting,” Fitzgibbons explained. Fabrication and maintenance occur in-house. The Trekkers, used in many Las Vegas tours, were created in collaboration with Chrysler, the maker of Jeep® Wrangler. This partnership resulted in a custom vehicle that was the first of its kind and took nearly four years to complete.”

This blend of training excellence and proprietary vehicle design has helped Pink Jeep Tours earn trust from travel professionals, repeat guests, and organizations like the Southern Nevada Hotel Concierge Association and Tripadvisor.

Stewardship and Access: Going Beyond the Road

Pink Jeep Tours’ appeal also lies in its ability to take guests into places many other operators can’t — and to do so responsibly. Through exclusive permits and partnerships, the company helps protect the landscapes it traverses while enhancing the guest experience.

“Pink Jeep Tours’ commitment to the outdoors and stewardship isn’t separate from the guest experience; it’s what makes that experience possible…,” Fitzgibbons noted. “Our exclusive permits and long-standing partnerships give us deeper access to protected areas.”

In Sedona, for example, Pink Jeep is a founding member of Trail Partners of Arizona, a coalition focused on responsible off-road recreation and land preservation, education, and trail improvement efforts. Guides bring up-to-date geological, ecological, and historical knowledge to every tour, deepening visitors’ connection with the environment.

Bringing the Pink Jeep Experience to New Regions

While Sedona remains one of its signature destinations, Pink Jeep Tours has expanded into markets like the Smoky Mountains and Branson. With that growth comes the challenge of translating the brand’s signature experience into new landscapes.

“Whether we’re touring through the Valley of Fire’s maze-like canyons or past rushing streams in the Smoky Mountains, exploring the great outdoors and reconnecting with nature is what Pink Jeep Tours is all about. We craft our itineraries to spark awe, ground our training in shared knowledge to keep every experience consistent, and let innovation guide us toward constant improvement,” Hudson said of the brand’s signature destinations.

Fitzgibbons added, “Our commitment to guests and employees is steadfast, and we are fortunate to have a philosophy and culture that translates across geographies.”

These guiding principles ensure that whether you’re riding over red rocks or through forested trails, the hallmark Pink Jeep experience remains intact.

What Guests Take Away

At the core of every Pink Jeep Tour is a human connection — not just to nature, but to the people who guide you through it.

“When you step off a tour, you will know your guide’s name, and they will know yours. Together, you will have seen something extraordinary – made all the more special by a guide with an intimate connection to their local landscape… Perhaps, like us, you will have caught the bug to keep on exploring. We certainly hope that you do!” Hudson told us.

That personal touch — combined with breathtaking scenery, expert insight, and a vehicle color that refuses to blend in — helps explain why Pink Jeep Tours has remained an adventure travel favorite for more than half a century.
