Dry January at dLeña in DC Take Center Stage

Mindful drinking continues to shape dining culture, and this January, Washington DC welcomes a thoughtfully crafted non-alcoholic cocktail experience designed to stand on its own. At forward-thinking restaurants across the city, zero-proof beverages are no longer an afterthought, but a deliberate extension of the culinary story.

One of the most compelling examples can be found at dLeña, where a limited-time menu elevates alcohol-free cocktails into a fully realized creative expression.

A New Standard for Zero-Proof Cocktails

Throughout January, Washington DC zero-proof cocktails receive a refined upgrade with a curated collection that prioritizes balance, depth, and narrative. Instead of replicating classic cocktails, these beverages are built from the ground up using premium alcohol-free spirits and layered ingredients.

According to Richard Sandoval Hospitality’s Head of Mixology Riesler Morales, the creative process behind the menu was intentionally expansive and exploratory:

“Creating The Art of Zero-Proof was pure creative joy. Over nearly eight months, we challenged ourselves to forget everything we knew about traditional cocktails and rebuild them with imagination, new zero-proof spirits, and unexpected ingredients. The process was playful, obsessive, and deeply collaborative, always asking, ‘How do we make this feel just as exciting, indulgent, and soulful without alcohol?’ When we finally tasted the finished menu, it felt effortless, like a perfectly rehearsed orchestra where every flavor hit its note.”

That philosophy is evident in every glass, where structure and technique mirror the experience of a fully spirited cocktail.

Signature Non-Alcoholic Cocktails to Try This January

Guests visiting dLeña can explore a trio of inventive zero-proof drinks that draw from global flavors and modern mixology techniques.

Highlights From the January Zero-Proof Menu

  • A crisp, botanical-forward aperitif layered with garden herbs, apple, aloe, and fresh grape notes
  • A tropical-inspired milk punch blending coconut, mango, citrus, and subtle heat for a smooth, rounded finish
  • A vibrant green margarita-style cocktail featuring citrus, pandan, jalapeño, aromatic herbs, and a savory salted rim

Each drink is designed to complement the menu rather than simply replace a traditional cocktail, making the experience feel intentional and complete.

Dry January and the Evolution of Zero-Proof Mixology in DC

For diners embracing Dry January or simply seeking elevated alternatives, this program highlights how zero-proof cocktails in Washington DC have evolved into a serious craft. At dLeña, the bar team views alcohol-free beverages as an opportunity to push creative boundaries.

dLeña Bar Manager Kyre Williams explains the growing momentum behind the movement:

“Dry January is a resounding movement in the DMV, especially in the restaurant scene. There is a misconception that mocktails are not up to par with regular beverages that contain liquor. However, in the world of mixology the availability to manipulate herbs, spices, fruits, etc. is vast. With the addition of alcohol-free spirits, you can further push the envelope as it pertains to complex and flavorful mocktails. Alongside the fresh beverages we already provide here at dLeña, the highlight of zero-proof cocktails is an ode to the craft of bartending.”

The result is an experience that feels indulgent, celebratory, and rooted in technique.
