Broadway’s Guide to NYC with Tony Winner Bonnie Milligan

The Broadway show Kimberly Akimbo is a unique and captivating story about a young teen’s struggle for happiness in a seemingly hopeless situation. Based on the play of the same name, the titular character forges her way through life as a teenager who appears to be 72 years old. We talked with Kimberly Akimbo cast member Bonnie Milligan about her NYC favorites.

Tell us about your current Broadway role!

Milligan: Kimberly Akimbo centers on a New Jersey teen with a fictional condition that ages her 4.5 times faster than normal, played by Victoria Clark. I play Kimberly’s wise-cracking, constantly in trouble with the law, Aunt Debra. I get to come in and shake things up in some super funny and ridiculous ways!

How did you get your start in performing, and in what other shows have you performed?

Milligan: I come from a very musical family, so I have always sung. I started singing in church and then acting in school plays as I got older. I went to school for acting and, since landing in NYC, have done several Off-Broadway shows, the first National tour of Kinky Boots, and then made my Broadway debut with Head Over Heels in 2018.

What is your favorite Broadway show to see as an audience member?

Milligan: I love all shows, but my absolute favorite thing is to see a new musical. Something that will surprise me and take me on a ride. I love laughing, but I also love the catharsis of something deeper. I think that’s why I love my current show so much; we have both.

What are your favorite NYC local tips?

Milligan: There are so many fabulous neighborhoods to explore in our beautiful city. Take different days or nights and try to explore multiple areas. Spend an evening watching some comedy and grabbing a few drinks in the West Village. Walk the High Line or visit Little Island if it’s nice out. Go skating at Bryant Park. Take a trip to The Cloisters! There are so many things to see and experience, don’t limit yourself to one area. And Google maps can help you navigate how to get there and what train to use very easily!

If you’re going out for a night on the town in New York City, where would you go?

Milligan: When not working on a show, I really do love seeing theatre. I love grabbing a bite down on St. Marks Place and then maybe seeing a show at The Public, with drinks at Phebe’s afterward. A lot of nights, I’ll just try new restaurants with friends and then walk about the neighborhood a bit.

Where are your favorite spots to send family and friends when they visit?

Milligan: Broadway shows! They love grabbing some Ray’s Pizza every time they come in too. For bigger groups, I usually send them to Pio Pio, an amazing Peruvian restaurant they won’t find in the Midwest. And they always have a fun time around the High Line.
