Elijah Rhea Johnson from MJ The Musical is Our Broadway Guide Insider

How did you get your start in your performing career?
Johnson- Around the time I was eight years old, my dad showed me Jackson 5 and Michael Jackson music videos on YouTube. From the moment I saw Michael sing and dance, I was hooked! That year, I performed Dancing Machine by The Jackson at my school’s talent show, and I’ve been performing ever since. My first professional entertainment job was being cast as Young Simba in the Las Vegas Broadway production of Disney’s The Lion King at ten years old.

What is your favorite Broadway show to see as an audience member?

Johnson- I’m a little biased, but my favorite Broadway show to see as an audience member is MJ! Our show is incredible from start to finish, our cast is impeccable, the choreography is some of the best on Broadway, and, of course, the music is ICONIC. I don’t get a chance to watch our show that often, but when I do, I’m always amazed at the story we are telling and how we tell it.

What are your favorite NYC local tips?
Johnson- Bodegas are your best friend!

If you’re going out for a night on the town in New York City, where would you go?
Johnson- One of my favorite places to get Omakase is Sushi Kai in the East Village. That place is absolutely fantastic, and I often go there on my nights off!

Where are your favorite spots to send family and friends when they visit?
Johnson- It’s so hard to narrow down! Sometimes, I send them for dinner in Tribeca, go shopping in Soho, see other amazing Broadway shows in Midtown, or (depending on the time of year) for a picnic in Central Park. It’s one of my favorite things about New York; there’s so much to do!!

What is your favorite meal to enjoy in NYC?
Johnson- A little Italian Wine Bar in the East Village called Spēs has a Mafalde pasta dish with Lamb Ragu that I absolutely LOVE. It’s one of the few places that I know of that is open super-late, so I tend to go there for a quick bite after an amazing show!
