Broadway Guide Insider: Kayla Davion in Elf: The Musical

Nobody knows New York City like a local. Some of the city’s notable locals are also the stars of Broadway. We talked with Kayla Davion, who stars as Jovie in Elf: The Musical, about her favorite places in New York City.

Tell us about your current Broadway role!
Davion- I am currently playing the role of Jovie in Elf: The Musical on Broadway! Jovie is in need of Christmas spirit. She is a very blunt human who has always wanted to experience the version of New York that she’s heard about since she moved from LA. For one reason or another, in her time there, she seems to have lost her glimpse of joy and true Christmas spirit. This is where she meets Buddy, who is just as honest as her and shows her how to believe in the magic of life again!

How did you get your start in performing, and in what other shows have you performed?
Davion- I was raised in the church; my dad was a pastor, so I grew up singing through that avenue. I have always loved performing when it came to singing, but I didn’t really get into theatre until I was aware of an opportunity to do a Musical called Memphis for a theatre festival that changed my life for the better. From there, I knew I needed to see this new avenue of my life out, and I went to school to study for it at Ball State University! Chirp Chirp! It was truly one of the best decisions of my life. I have since performed on Broadway in Waitress (where I was the first African American woman to step into the role of Dawn), King Kong (Original Broadway cast), Tina: The Tina Turner Musical (Original Broadway Cast and where I later moved into playing the iconic role of Tina), and now Elf! I was also seen in Soul Train the Musical and White Girl in Danger.

How would you describe your show to someone completely unfamiliar with Broadway?
Davion- I would describe my show as an adventure of Buddy the Elf, who finds out he is human and travels to New York in the beginning to find his dad and, in the end, teaches all those he encounters about the true meaning of Christmas Spirit!

What do you love most about the show you are performing in right now?
Davion- I love the people, the laughter, and the heart! This show holds so many emotions for audience members when they watch it. We have such a genuine FUN time doing this show every day for people, and not to mention the cast and crew of this production are some of the most talented, kindest people on the planet!

What was the one NYC lesson you learned shortly after arriving in the Big Apple?
Davion- I learned that if you walk slowly through New York, you will be in for a bumpy ride, lol

What are the best tips you can give a visitor?
Davion- Move at a decent pace when walking; people will yell, but it’s just how some people talk, haha. Do not take photos with Mickey Mouse and them on the street unless you are gonna pay, and New York has some of the best Thai and sushi spots! Check them out!

If you’re going out for a night in the town of New York City, where would you go?
Davion- HOLD FAST! It’s a super small bar, but they have some of the best food and drinks and people you’ll ever meet!

Where are your favorite spots to send family and friends when they visit?
Davion- My favorite spots are the High Line if they like to walk and Glass House Tavern for a nightcap!

What is your favorite meal to enjoy in NYC, and where is it best?
Davion- Ah, I have so many favorite meals, but I think right now I would say Sushi at RA on 43rd!!

What do you love best about New York City?
Davion- I love the pace of New York City and the diversity. Being in a place where so many ethnicities and religions coexist is quite beautiful to me. This means that there, in fact, is a place for all of us to thrive. The pace and heartbeat of the city keep you dreaming and pushing for greatness and remind you to really LIVE. I love it here!
