Isabelle McCalla from Water for Elephants on Her NYC Favorites
Tell us about your current Broadway role!
McCalla- I play Marlena in Water for Elephants. She is a gifted equestrian and has innate powers of healing all those she comes in contact with. It’s such a fun role. I get to sing these haunting ballads, dance on a trapeze, and play opposite my favorite scene partners ever, Grant Gustin and Paul Alexander Nolan.
How did you get your start in performing, and in what other shows have you performed?
McCalla- My mother put me in ballet class when I was 8 for the discipline of it. She wanted me to be a nuclear physicist, but I caught the bug early, so the joke’s on her. My previous Broadway shows were Shucked, The Prom, and Aladdin.
What is your favorite Broadway show to see as an audience member?
McCalla- Do I have to pick just one?!? Oh boy. I was really swept away by Illinoise. I thought it was some of the most beautiful storytelling through dance I’ve seen in a long while.
What are your favorite NYC local tips?
McCalla- Don’t stop in the middle of the sidewalk when walking. And for sure GET OFF YOUR PHONE WHILE CROSSING THE STREET! Drivers, bikers, and even pedestrians are wild. Be present!
If you’re going out for a night on the town in New York City, where would you go?
McCalla- I’m partial to the West Village. There are tons of fantastic restaurants and bars in that area that you can hop to.
Where are your favorite spots to send family and friends when they visit?
McCalla- Cacio E Pepe for dinner in the Lower East Side. They serve you pasta out of a Pecorino Cheese wheel, and OH MY LORDIE, is it delicious. Definitely take some lactaid pills before consuming though.
What is your favorite meal to enjoy in NYC?
McCalla- You can’t beat a New York slice of pizza on the go.
