Nobody knows New York City like a local. Some of the city’s notable locals are also the stars of Broadway. We talked with Gaby Diaz from Broadway’s Illionoise about her favorite places in New York City.
Gaby Diaz from Illinoise on Her NYC Favorites
Tell us about your current Broadway role!
Diaz- I am currently playing Shelby in Illinoise At the St. James Theatre. Really, this character feels like it’s just me in a fictional circumstance. So much of the show was built for us; there was no character breakdown I went in and auditioned for. I get to play with some of my best friends of years, my onstage AND offstage life partner, and I think the audience can feel the authenticity of these relationships on stage.
How did you get your start in performing, and in what other shows have you performed?
Diaz- I started performing at age 3. Classic baby ballet in a dance recital. It was my first love, and I’ve never looked back. I’ve gotten to perform in various types of shows that span from JLo’s Las Vegas Residency All I Have, to Ohad Naharin’s Decadance with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. Illinoise marks my Broadway debut.
What is your favorite Broadway show to see as an audience member?
Diaz- I have really enjoyed going to see plays. I sometimes have a hard time suspending my disbelief watching musicals, but I have found plays to be very grounding and thought-provoking for me.
What are your favorite NYC local tips?
Diaz- I guess I would say if you can get to where you need to go by foot, do it. It is cheaper, and often faster, to commute by walking.
If you’re going out for a night on the town in New York City, where would you go?
Diaz- I really don’t go out very often, as I am a freelance artist in New York trying to save my coins! But if I did, I love going down to the West Village for a nice dinner and just wandering about. The beauty of New York is you can just walk around and stumble upon a magical spot.
Where are your favorite spots to send family and friends when they visit?
Diaz- I really enjoy spending time in Riverside Park. The Ellington in the Park has a wonderful ambiance. Perfect place to enjoy a beer with good company and watch the sunset.
What is your favorite meal to enjoy in NYC?
Diaz- I will happily devour a chopped cheese from a bodega any day, any time.
