This non-profit structure allows the facility to tackle critical ecological challenges—ranging from plastic pollution and climate change to sustainable seafood policy and sea otter rehabilitation.
“We are focused on our mission to inspire conservation of the ocean,” says the Monterey Bay Aquarium team. “Instead of shareholders, we have members and donors who generously empower our conservation programs to protect and conserve marine ecosystems, reduce plastic pollution, support sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, and combat climate change.”
That conservation focus seamlessly connects to the guest experience. The Aquarium designs its exhibits to mirror natural marine ecosystems, allowing visitors to view animals behaving as they would in the wild.
“We want to create memorable experiences that inspire, connect, and promote action,” the Monterey Bay Aquarium team shares. “Our remarkable location on Monterey Bay inspires us to share innovative on-site and digital experiences that spark awe, invite curiosity, and promote empathy for ocean life.”
To foster meaningful family visits across generations, dedicated Guest Experience team members engage directly with guests throughout the floor. Interactive video technology, daily feeding demonstrations, and immersive exhibit layouts encourage active discovery for children, parents, and grandparents alike.
Inclusivity and Community Impact
Accessibility and environmental justice are central pillars of the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s overarching mission. The institution works directly with regional partners to ensure people of all backgrounds and physical abilities feel supported and represented.

On the educational front, the Aquarium has hosted free field trips for school groups since 1985, welcoming students to explore marine science at the Bechtel Education Center. Through initiatives like the Future Leaders Scholarship, first-generation students pursuing ocean science degrees at California State University, Monterey Bay receive full tuition, housing, books, and four years of direct staff mentorship.

In one notable digital milestone, a popular video game streamer inspired by the Aquarium’s live sea otter camera launched an annual fundraiser for its conservation work. Starting with a modest $320.18 raised in 2019, the online campaign generated over $1 million for marine health between 2019 and 2024.
Behind the scenes, the facility practices the same environmental stewardship it preaches to the public. Operating directly on the Monterey Bay coastline, the facility has set a goal to achieve net-zero emissions and waste by 2035.
“We’ve reached some significant milestones toward these goals,” notes the Monterey Bay Aquarium team. “For example, we’ve been wind- and solar-powered since 2018, and we’ve eliminated single-use plastics in our gift shop, café, and restaurant.”
