How to Maximize the CityPASS in Philadelphia: Tips from a Travel Expert

When planning a trip to a city as historically and culturally dense as Philadelphia, travelers often find themselves overwhelmed by endless options. While competing programs pack their itineraries with dozens of smaller locations, the CityPASS in Philadelphia strictly offers a customizable “pick your count” model—allowing visitors to choose packages for 3, 4, or 5 attractions out of a curated list of the city’s top 10 sites.

Limiting the core list to 10 heavy hitters—including legendary spots like The Franklin Institute and the Barnes Foundation—is a deliberate strategy designed to save travelers from decision fatigue.

“At the time of conception in 1997, CityPASS was the first attraction pass model in North America,” says Meg Heinen, Director, Media Relations for CityPASS. “The vision of the founders was to handpick and curate the very best, most iconic attractions in a destination rather than including “everything”, and bundle them into one prepaid, discounted ticket. Travelers were, and are currently, facing an overwhelming choice of things to do and see when traveling. And all those choices add up to a lot of money. Their goal was to simplify the planning, remove the stress of researching what to do and package them into one purchase at a highly discounted rate.”

Understanding the 9-Day Window: Built for Slow Travel and Staycations

A common mistake tourists make is trying to cram an entire city’s worth of sightseeing into a frantic 48 hours. Using the CityPASS in Philadelphia combats this by offering a generous 9-day consecutive validity window, catering perfectly to those who prefer to absorb a destination without watching the clock.

“The 9-day validity provides for a lot of flexibility so visitors can relax and enjoy the attractions at their own pace, no need to rush,” Heinen explains. “For staycationers in major metropolitan areas, two weekends to use the tickets provides ample time and flexibility.”

For families caught between choosing a CityPASS in Philadelphia or competing time-based options like Go City, Heinen notes that the traditional CityPASS is distinctly tailored for specific types of sightseers. According to Heinen, the primary audiences include:

  • First-timers who are focused on “must-see” experiences and trust a curated list over researching dozens of options.
  • Planners who value simplicity and prefer to lock in plans before even arriving at their destination.
  • Value-conscious travelers who specifically target expensive, high-tier attractions to secure the best savings.
  • Moderate-paced travelers who explicitly do not want to try to do everything, making full use of that 9-day window.

Maximizing Cash Savings: The Golden Rule

Financially speaking, sightseers using the pass can save up to 50% on combined admission prices. However, to walk away with the absolute maximum amount of cash kept in your pocket, you need to know how to select your 3, 4, or 5 choices strategically.

The “golden rule” is simple: prioritize the attractions with the highest individual gate prices.

“CityPASS attempts to be very transparent with our pricing during the purchase process,” says Heinen. “We show the normal general admission rate for each attraction, so travelers can see which the highest priced attractions are and decide to visit those to get the most savings. If a visitor clicks on “Your Savings” in the purchase area, they can scroll down and see each attraction’s general admission rate, add up the regular cost to visit, and then compare to the CityPASS price.”

The Perfect Day One Itinerary Strategy

The Big Bus Company 1-Day Hop-On Hop-Off Tour is easily one of the most popular choices on the Philadelphia list. When it comes to maximizing its utility, timing is everything. Using it at the very start of your journey can completely change how you navigate the rest of your trip.

“Personally, I would use it on the first day to get the lay of the land, see the proximity of the attractions, and plan from there,” Heinen recommends. “Or, visitors can take a look at Google or Apple Maps, see what attractions are on the route, and use the Big Bus as their transportation to those attractions they’d like to see that day. I’m sure people would strategize based on personal priorities.”

Stress-Free Tech: Mastering the CityPASS App

Nothing spoils a vacation faster than arriving at a world-class venue like the Barnes Foundation or Adventure Aquarium only to find out timed-entry slots are entirely sold out. The CityPASS in Philadelphia resolves this logistical headache through its dedicated app, which speaks directly to the venues themselves.

“Yes, the app is integrated with most, if not all, the reservation systems at each attraction,” confirms Heinen. “When using the app, ticket holders will see the available time slots and secure reservations directly with the attractions. They can also manage any cancellations via the app.”

Beyond managing entries, the app acts as a pocket-sized digital tour guide, continuously evolving to make navigating the city smoother.

“As with all technology, it’s a work in progress and more features are continually being added,” Heinen notes. “It offers maps and directions integrated with Google or Apple Maps, which give directions to the attractions and show surrounding restaurants, businesses, and other attractions. It offers attraction details such as hours, where to enter, what’s included with entry, advice for visitors, and highlights. It also has direct links to our Help Center, Live Chat, WhatsApp, and eight different language translations.”
